Both are best, but I would say if you were to choose between keeping a journal and investing in a friendship, choose the friendship. As much as a journal can help you think, process information, track thought, and follow personal progress (and it can), a good friend can do this better.
It doesn't bother me too much that I haven't kept a good journal lately. I have invested in more friendships lately than I have before, and it feels healthy.
