"The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing;
he frustrates the plans of the peoples.
The counsel of the LORD stands forever,
the plans of his heart to all generations.
Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people whom he has chosen as his heritage!
The LORD looks down from heaven;
he sees all the children of man;
from where he sits enthroned he looks out
on all the inhabitants of the earth,
he who fashions the hearts of them all
and observes all their deeds.
The king is not saved by his great army;
a warrior is not delivered by his great strength.
The war horse is a false hope for salvation,
and by its great might it cannot rescue.
Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those who fear him,
on those who hope in his steadfast love,
that he may deliver their soul from death
and keep them alive in famine."
(Psalm 33:10-19 ESV)
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the [elect] exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce. Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease. But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare."
(Jeremiah 29:4-8 ESV)
God is Sovereign and in control of kings and elections. He will not be surprised tonight by what happens, and no politician, no campaign, and no political party can thwart his plan. Our blessing comes from belonging to God, not from being American. Our hope is in Him.
Still, as elect pilgrims living in this world, we are commanded to seek the welfare of our country, for our own welfare is found in the country's welfare. We should pray well for America today. We probably should seek its welfare by voting today. Waiting for God is essential, but we must also act in faith.
