About the Picture: Most people think of lightning bugs in July or August. However, there is a certain species of lightning bugs that become active in early spring. They live underground as pupae during the cold spring, and emerge in summer as adult insects. If you're lucky, every once in a while you may be able to turn some up by digging shallow holes in the middle of the night. The best places to look are nutrient rich and silty earth near moving water. The above picture is several composite shots taken over several minutes, and put together in Photoshop.
By the way, happy April: spring is here!
