There’s an old adage among people who study political behavior: party identification is the most powerful force in the world. That seems applicable here. Why do white evangelical Republicans hold conservative views on immigration and economics? It’s because they are Republicans and the GOP’s view of these issues is conservative. It’s fair to assume that many white evangelicals were drawn to the GOP over culture war issues while disagreeing on economic policy during the time of Pat Buchanan, but that’s just not the case any longer.
Burge, Ryan P.. 20 Myths about Religion and Politics in America (p. 140). Augsburg Fortress Publishers. Kindle Edition.
This is such an insightful book. I'm learning new things chapter by chapter. It's a title that really warrants a look for those interested in the intersection of Religion and American politics.
