Bodily Training Is of Some Value

"There are some very positive lessons to be learned from competition.... Pushing through tiredness and discomfort in a race to a new personal record is not only rewarding in itself, but gives you an idea of what you can do in other areas of your life. Strengths we have never used lie buried in each of us. Being challenged to our limits through competition helps these surface. Competition can be the the path-finding mission which allows us to map our inner resources. At the same time, experiencing some frustration and pain can help us realize our limitations. By struggling we discover a bit more about the person inside us; we can learn from our mistakes and move on to new heights."

While presented from a distinctly non-christian viewpoint, I think this quote makes a valid point. Running is helpful for more than just staying in fit. Believers should seek to know both their weakness and their strength in Christ more. I believe running has helped me to know mine better. Running is good for self-discovery, and for understanding discipline.

Part of the reason I run is so that I would take more seriously that great race. If I can see the value in running hard in this little race, hopefully I will see better value of that most important race:

"For while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. The saying is trustworthy and deserving full acceptance. For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe."
